Best Mattress Topper for Back Pain: A UK Buyer's Guide
A mattress topper is one of the cheapest ways to change how a bed feels – but the wrong topper can make back pain worse, not better. This guide covers what to look for if your goal is genuine pressure relief, not just a softer bed.
First, the diagnosis
A topper helps with back pain caused by an old or too-firm mattress. It doesn't help with back pain caused by a sagging mattress – a topper just sits on top of the dip, and you'll still feel it underneath. If you can see your mattress sagging in the middle, replace the mattress, don't add a topper.
Toppers also work better for some sleep positions than others.
- Side sleepers: need cushioning at the shoulders and hips. A thicker topper (4 inches / 10 cm) usually helps.
- Back sleepers: need lumbar support – a medium-firm topper that holds shape (memory foam or microfibre) is best.
- Stomach sleepers: a thinner, firmer topper (2 inches / 5 cm) prevents the lower back from sinking.
Material types and what they do
Memory foam
Conforms to the body, distributes weight evenly, and keeps shape under pressure. Best at relieving pressure points but can sleep warm and tends to off-gas for the first few days. Look for at least 5 lb/ft³ density for genuine support.
Microfibre (hollowfibre fill)
A plush, quilted topper with a polyester fill. Soft, breathable, and considerably cooler than memory foam. Good for adding cushioning to a mattress that's otherwise too firm. The SAIMAZ 4-inch microfibre mattress topper is in this category – 1200 gsm filling for plushness, hypoallergenic, and fits mattresses up to 40 cm deep.
Latex
Naturally springy and supportive, slightly bouncier than memory foam. Pricier but very durable. A good choice for back sleepers who want lumbar support without the 'sinking' feel.
Quilted protector-toppers
Hybrid products that protect the mattress from spills while adding light cushioning. Less effective for back pain than a true topper, but useful if you want both protection and a slightly softer feel. See our quilted mattress protectors and toppers.
How thick should it be?
- 2–3 inches (5–7 cm) – light cushioning, suits stomach sleepers and people who like firm beds.
- 4 inches (10 cm) – the sweet spot for most back pain. Enough to relieve pressure points without changing the feel of the bed completely.
- 5+ inches (12 cm+) – substantial cushioning. Risk of overheating with memory foam at this depth.
Fit: don't skip the strap check
A topper that slides around at night is a topper that doesn't help your back. Look for:
- All-round elastic edges or strong corner straps rated for the depth of your mattress.
- Strap length that fits beds up to at least 40 cm deep – most modern UK mattresses with a topper or pillow-top exceed 30 cm.
- Hypoallergenic fill if you're allergy-prone.
Care
Most microfibre and quilted toppers are machine washable at 40 °C and tumble dry safely on low. Memory foam usually isn't – spot-clean only and use a removable cover. A protector layer between the topper and your fitted sheet extends its life by years.
Quick picks
- Side sleepers with hip / shoulder pain: 4-inch microfibre topper.
- Back sleepers with lower back pain: 4-inch memory foam (medium density).
- Anyone who runs hot: microfibre over memory foam, every time.
- Mattress is firm but otherwise good: 4-inch plush microfibre is the cheapest impactful change.
