Polycotton (50% cotton, 50% polyester)
The most popular choice for UK households. Polycotton blends the soft, breathable feel of cotton with the durability and wrinkle-resistance of polyester. The result is a sheet that washes well, dries fast, and looks neat without ironing.
Best for: kids' rooms, guest beds, busy households, anyone who hates ironing.
Watch out for: polycotton breathes less well than 100% cotton, so if you sleep hot, you may find it slightly warmer.

100% cotton
The benchmark. Pure cotton breathes better than any blend, gets softer with every wash, and lasts longer. The trade-off is creasing – 100% cotton wrinkles more, especially out of the dryer, and may need ironing if you want a hotel-crisp finish.
Best for: hot sleepers, sensitive skin, anyone who genuinely loves crisp sheets and doesn't mind ironing.
Watch out for: 'cotton-rich' isn't the same thing – it's a marketing term that just means more than half cotton, often 60/40 or 80/20. Check the label.
Satin silk
Smooth, glossy, and cool to the touch. Satin silk is technically a weave, not a fibre – modern satin sheets are usually polyester woven in a satin construction to mimic silk's feel at a fraction of the price.
Satin's biggest practical benefit isn't the look – it's friction. The smooth surface means less drag on your hair and skin, which can reduce overnight bedhead, frizz and friction-related breakage. People with curly hair, those who get morning skin creases, and skincare-conscious sleepers tend to swear by it.
Best for: hair-care, skin-care, hot weather, people who like a 'cool' feel.
